Paraphrase of Telegram from Count de Salis to Sir E. Grey, No. 64, dated May 14th, 1909.

Railways in China.

At to-day's meeting an agreement in the following

terms was drawn up and signed by the British and German

delegates:

A joint loan to be issued to the amount of

£5,500,000.

A British engineer for the whole of the Canton-

Hankow line to be appointed.

A German engineer to be appointed for the Hupel

section of the Hankow-Szechuan line about 500 miles.

The three groups to participate equally in the

supply of materials as regards both lines, including

the extension.

The Chinese Central Railways to appoint engineers

for the Ichang-Chengtu extension for the first section

a French engineer, for the final section an English

engineer.

With regard to this the French claim that

their section be made equal in length to the Hupel sec-

tion.
